Generator

I've replaced the brushes awhile back on both generator and starter. What else can a guy do????. reggiedog

Make sure the bushings/bearings are in good condition and well lubed. Yesterday I took apart a powerhouse generator that a fellow club memeber brought over. He had cleaned and painted it and it looked very nice, but I told him it feels too stiff when turning the pulley. He left it for me to go through and check the bearings. The little bit of remaining 83 year old grease was very dry and hard. After cleaning the bearings they feel good and can be reused with a good repack of Mystik JT-6 High Temp grease.

Had he installed the generator and run it, the bearings would have been destroyed within a few miles, then the armature would have hit the field poles and destroyed both those parts also, as well as possible breaking the perfect 5 brush holder.

that is pretty smart< would have never thought of that. Please explain how to do this.

The reason for the cut out is to prevent the generator from becoming a motor. If one were to apply 6 volts to the generator by attaching a battery or large battery charger to the outside of the case and to the output terminal, it will run like a motor if it's good or rebuildable. If it does not you still have a chance to rebuild it but there is most likley an open some where.

Thank's Mike I wasn't going to do that any way I have a buddy of mine that I asked to help me with all of it the starter and the gen I told him that I have changed the brushes in both and they did work when I took them off. I just said that I just wanted to have them all rechecked I wonder how much he's going to charge me I haven't seen him for years. He must have the barn or h.a.m.b cause he pm'd me the other day but thanks he has been reading all of these too. reggiedog
