Brumfield, Winfield or other?

Just a simple question. Looking at heads and wanting to know what people run/like the most. I have been looking into the Brumfield specifically the 5.9 to 1. I have also seen the winfield 6 to 1 aluminum but it seems like it is smarter to go with the Brumfield and save the money. What do you guys think?

I tried to get a Brumfield and he wasn't making any until the economy comes back around. The Winfield has no piston relief so you have to make sure your pitons don't come above the deck. After all of this I went with a Snyder head. I just installed it so I can't give you a review but guys on here talk very highly of the Snyder.

You can add the piston relief...

It's no secret which one I prefer. (he-he-)

The Brumfield Heads will guarantee you plenty of bang for the buck! They are proven products for any performance output within the range of a flatheads's capabilities.

The B-F 5.9 alone adds anywhere from 10 to 15 MPH top speed increase to your A engine. If top speed is not your thing then climbing hills in 3rd gear are a breeze where before you had to shift to second to make the grade.

Brumfield Heads have been manufactured from as low as 5.2 to 8.5 in compression ratio with heads greater than 5.9 (known as Brumfield Super Heads) being different castings. The 5.9 has been refined several times over the years with slight changes which added peformance and the next batch will have another change that I've already tested on my dyno to increase the power even more without changing the compression ratio.

As for the B-F Super Heads, besides the different compression ratios, only a few of them are exactly alike nowadays because nearly everybody is changing their valve size, the lift plus the valve thickness is different, carburetors, cams, different deck heights, etc., etc. and the B-F Super Heads are made to accommodate them individually. As an example, Speedy Ed J. received a B-F Super Head a couple years ago that was different than any I've made. With his Brierly Cam and valve thickness, the total distance from the flat of the valve to the block was .444 thousandths of an inch!

You mean producing any.

I provided the information so new people on this forum will know. Once the economy stabilizes a bit more there will be more B-F Heads. Many of the Model A'ers are on fixed incomes, lost their jobs, etc., etc.. and even though they participate in Model A ing and this forum (which is free) it's another story when it comes to laying out the "Long Green" for the purchase of a high compression head or any other expensive Model A accessory.

Do you have any heads ? I hope times get better for ya soon.

Larry,
Do you have any time frame that you will be back up and producing heads? The economy could take a while. Im not ready to drop the money tomorrow but hopefully i will do some more research about other add ons i want in conjunction with a high comp head and be ready by the end of summer/early fall time. You think you will have more available by then?

Thanks
Jonathan

Larry, Not in a Hurry here either, but may want a second BF 5.9 in about a year. Actually it may be for Dad's coupe. He has a slightly higher than stock compression head here that came off af a diamond block, will have to see how that one runs first. Rod

I cut back spending on bowling, golf, political contributions, all-you-can-eat smorgasbords, rap concert tickets, rat rod parts, and cuban ceegars. I am still spending on Model A Ford necessities and, I admit it, frivialities, too. My "investments" in the later category are limited, however. Brass bermuda bells and Spirt if St.Louis mascots are still more precious (to the guy who's got 'em) than my extravagence can muster.

I went with the Lion Head from Charlie Yapp, (SOSS) Very good quality, excellent runner. And it looks very sweet. Iceman

Group,

Currently I have an original head and would like comments regarding the Synders product. I'm pretty sure that I have the needed info on the Brumfield product.

What is funny is that I can't ever remember hearing a negative comment about the Snyder heads, or about dealing with them. I think that speaks volumes about the product and their service and there isn't much need for them to respond to criticism. Most of the folks that I know that run HC heads are using Snyder's overwhelmingly, and there are minimal problems ordering or waiting for them, or with them.

Larry, I bought one of your heads from Snyders in 96 or 97. I first tried to get one from you because it was what I really wanted after reading about your heads in the secrets of speed journal. All I ever got at the time was a recording. I finaly said what the hell, I'll just go ahead and buy a 5.5 from Snyders. In three or four days I got my head and was delighted to see it had the BF on it. This head was listed as 5.5 compression ratio in the Snyders catalog. My question is was this actualy 5.5 or was it the regular Brumfield 5.9 ? It doesn't seem to have quiet as much power as the Brumfield 5.9 that I got from Berts in 99 and the best Brumfield 5.9 was the one that I got from you in 05. Your heads just seemed to get better and better and I have never had a problem with any of your heads, not even the first two that are still running grade 5 studs and nuts that are torqued at only 55 ft. lbs. It is good to see you posting again. I was begining to wonder if you were still alive.

Purdy, the Brumfield Heads have indeed been improved with changes over time (air flow changes) that increased the performance while maintaining the same compression ratio. The next batch (Reg. B-F as well as Super B-F) will have an air flow improvement that will increase performance even more.

Thanks

Larry, I would like to hear more about the Super Brumfield heads for the engines with larger intakes, (1.800), and the thicker exhaust valves. Also the recommended head gasket for these and are there any available? By the way, it is a "B" motor. You can reach me at [ jimparker1@sympatico.ca ] Thanks, Jim
