Flathead smokes a little

Most 49 - 51 engines still had hardened seats in the exhaust at least. They were phased out in 52 and 53. Probably some truck engines retained them. MMO does not replace lead as a seat lubricant for the exhaust.

my car is a 46 . and i mean it will only help the intake system not the exhaust. i dont know what is any year have what seats i was told to use it by a mechanic who worked on cars in the mid to early 50's. i dont and never claim to know everything . but i can only pass on what others have told me ..sorry if i miss lead anyone with the tread i wrote.

46fordnut, I use it even in my 57 inline6 ohv sometimes. Always have some on hand. Can't hurt anything that I'm aware of.

Given that the tops of the valves and guides have no oil source, how does a flattie pull oil down the guides and/or stems? Or, are you saying the oil is pulled up the stems by vacuum when coasting on a downhill run?

Vacuum will pull oil up past the oil seal on the guide, and or up the valve stem if there is enough wear, clearance.

MMO seems a little confusing 46fordnut are you saying if you do use it your engine will smoke a little? Why put it in the tank but not the engine?

Plagiarized from a boat forum.

Marvel Mystery Oil is a light napthenic oil based solvent and lubricant and has been around since the early 1920s.It was owned by the Marvel oil company up until 5 years ago when turtle wax purchased it. People have alot of disagreements about whats in MMO, how it should be used and its safety. The entire formula is still proprietary and a "mystery",but its basic ingredients are napthenic oil, oil of wintergreen and mineral spirits. Some folks claim it also has some phosphorous in it. No,it is not kerosene and ATF. As for its uses,it is a good product to use to break loose an old engine that hasnt been run for many years. It is useful as an engine flush, although some disagree about whether it should be left in the engine and driven or used only at idle.It is also useful in diesel engines and 2 cycle engines such as boat motors, lawnmowers, etc.to reduce smoking and deposits. As for use in modern cars with fuel injection, electric fuel pumps, complex emissions systems etc.,alot of people say it probably should not be used in these vehicles.Although some claim it is an effective fuel injector cleaner and mileage improver when used in gasoline. You have to use your own judgement.

my engine is old i dont know much of its service history when i got it did not run for 18 years. i only got it in 2005. it slept from 1989 til then. i dont know how much deposits are in my crank case. i worried mmo may loosen some and clog my oil pump or passages . that is why i dont add it to my oil and i only put it in my gas. if you add it in you gas it goes throu the whole intake system cleans and lubes only the intake side not exhaust side. not saying this would apply to you or anybody else but this is only my take . :) if add it to you engine it should not smoke but put to much in your gas tank and it sure will.
