Flathead smokes a little

I just fired up my 40 after sitting a couple years and the Flathead seems to smoke a little. Maybe a stuck ring or two? Anything additive I can put in the oil to maybe help Thanks, Jim

Jim, like the guys already said on your other post, put some mmo in the gas tank and oil pan and drive that old Ford. Al Gore probably won't like the smoke but I bet those rings will loosen up in no time and smoking will stop.

Pour the MMO down each side of the carb while the engine is running, that should clear things up. Just remember, Flatheads smoke because they can't chew...

If it smokes after going down a long hill, MMO won't cure it. It is pulling oil around the valve guides or valve stems. An other place to look is the under side of the intake manifold. The next time you have it off look for a stain running down the block intake runner. I have had one with a bad intake gasket use quite a lot of oil. Chuck

Given that the tops of the valves and guides have no oil source, how does a flattie pull oil down the guides and/or stems? Or, are you saying the oil is pulled up the stems by vacuum when coasting on a downhill run?

mine only smokes alittle from the breather tube where you fill the oil . normal? this only happens after it warms up. and i do have the mmo in my gas its very happy will run up and down the highway all day. no smoke from tail pipe.

When I first got my 53, the compression was down in two cylinders. I put one quart of Rislone in with my next oil change and the compression became the same in all cylinders. 125 lbs

Question to all about MMO.. How much do you put in the gas tank? And how much in the engine? .. Does it do any harm? And what are the benefits of both? Thanks

I don't use MMO in the oil, just in the gas. I put a shot or two in the gas tank when I fill up, not the most scientific but it works. On both our '39's, V8 and V-12 I installed a top oiler. I keep it filled with MMO and check it after a long drive of when I fill up the gas tank.

from what iv'e been told it lube the upper half of the engine when you use it in the gas. on the bottle should tell you how much to how may gallons. i use it only in my gas the car may smoke just a little . the old lead type fuel had the lead in it from what i understand to lube the upper half . some valve seats are not hardened this is why there was lead . the mmo takes the place of the lead plus it cleans and you use it. this is what i have hear.

the older fuel had lead. lead was used to lube the upper half, the valve seat are not hardened in some cases. mmo replaced the loss of the lead and lubes where the lead in the fuel did. i only use it in my gas . on the mmo bottle tells how much you should use. from what i have been told does not harm to anything just lubes and cleans as you use it. the car or truck may smoke a little not very bad thou. some told me this so this is why i use it . if you have a sticky valve it may free this up as well.

What is MMO?. i need some my flatty smokes too

MMO is Marvel Mystery Oil. It is a allusive oil that is coveted by vintage engine experts of all generations. Although hard to find, it is to be considered to be the magic elixir. Mysterious as the druids. The quest will be long and will require many hours of research. Best of luck and if you find it buy all that you can carry. Never relieve your source of said compound as it will be snatched up by seekers....

or go to autozone and ask.
