Horn button removel

I have removed the old horn rod from the steering shaft to discover the bottom 1/2 is missing so have a replacement that needs a new horn wire installed. What is the secret in removing the horn button without destroying it ?
I have bent out the tabs on the underside and tapped gently on them to drive then backwards but nothing is moving ?

It should come apart, the tabs are just pushed through the plate and then bent over. The tabs have to be really flat to go back out, might need a lot of wiggling to persuade them.

New retainers as a seperate item are not available. To rescue them, I have carefully soldered the retainer back to the plate.

Annealing depends on what it's made of but the process generally requires high heat application that can damage things like plating or paint followed by rapid quenching or slow cool down depending on what the metal composition is. Little stuff can survive at least one re-bending process but fatigue sets in and limits further bending. Annealing can help but it still may not survive much more bending.

If he breaks the tabs i have a few new ones he can use , Also need to make sure its clean under the button to make good earth contact, He is only 30 miles from me so can help ,

Thanks for all the info.I was able to disassemble everything and broke only one tab which then enabled me to use a screw driver to punch the retainer back out.The rod was soldered to the bottom side of the face plate which I will have to re-solder back on to get the required rod length at the bottom. As with every other part of my car , someone has been there already and applied a bunch of back yard mechanics to keep the old girl running back in the day.Almost every split pin on every part of the car was missing.
I removed the steering column from the car which has made the job a lot easier.

Thank you Derek ,having you only 30mls down the road has been a god send.
