Transmission noise (still!) V2

That is the weirdest transmission noise I have ever heard. Does not sound like a transmission noise at all. Also appears with clutch depressed no noise. It sounds like the clutch fingers are involved.

i agree with you that it doesn't sound like any ****** noise that i have ever heard.
in the video, when the clutch is engaged and the pedal fully released the throw-out bearing stops turning which means the throw out bearing is not touching the pressure plate. makes me think it is not the pressure plate.

i still maintain the idea to check the end play on the crank.
i had the same noise on a car i did. the crank moved back and the ring gear touched a nigh spot of the flywheel housing. same noise. i only found it by pulling everything apart.

now that you have that ****** out.
start and run that engine.
that will eliminate any chance the noise is from the engine. then go back to the ******.

I just started the engine. Its running very quietly - in so much as an engine with no exhaust connected, no transmission or flywheel cover, can run quietly. So the noise is not from the engine. But at least now I know!

perfect. that is good.
now back to the ******. these things can be frustrating.

Well, I thought I should give an update!

I am a tad embarassed about what I think was a major part of the transmission chatter:mad:. In many ways it was self-caused.

Several years ago I made the decision to replace the E28 multi-disc clutch as it was continually clogging. The idea was good but the implimentation not so good. I had a flywheel dowel retainer - so I re-used it - not realising that the diameter of the upgraded main drive gear was larger that that I previously had. That was mistake #1. As you can see from the picture it was a very snug fit and from the elongation of the centre/center hole, the drive gear was was hitting the retainer. So that contact of metal on metal was part of the issue. It would have probably lessened over time, but the metal filings in the clutch area was a no-no. Current Snyders price USD $2.50.

Secondly, in methodically checking and double checking every step of putting the transmission back together, I realised that there was no main drive gear snap ring. Perhaps the E28 multi-disc did not have one? No sure what the effects of that would be - but it was designed by Henry for a reason. Current Snyders price USD $5.95.

After replacing these "expensive" parts there was still noise, but I then started adjusting the clutch - just a turn or two. That was enough to make the car much more enjoyable to drive - basically the noise I have now is the whine in second gear - my late father said that all Model A's had a second gear whine. I don't know if that is true, but hey - I will go with that explanation!

So for a grand total of USD $8.45 for parts I now have a vehicle that I am happy to drive. I just need to get my back pain under control to enjoy driving it around.

That is great news!! Yes, I believe what your father sez is true. All Model As have a second gear whine, just some more than others. Enjoy!

Yes spur cut gears will always make a noise especially under a load 3rd gear is more quiet because the gears are no longer under a load and it is direct drive through the transmission!!!

A search on You Tube for test drives of cars from the Model A era will show that other cars of that time also had a noticeable gear whine in 2nd gear, and this includes cars costing several times as much as the "A". Some expensive cars of that era were coming out with what was touted as a "silent second gear transmission", which introduced Synchromesh to the automotive market.

My dad's low-mileage 1929 Chev had as much if not more second gear whine than most Model A's.

I think much of the second gear whine was eliminated when they started using helical cut gears. My Mitchell Synchro Transmission (with straight cut gears) "sings" to me almost as much as the original transmission it replaced...
