1936 steering gear rebuild question

Hello from northern Germany,
I am rebuilding my steering gear with the set from the early ford store.
I pressed the new worm gear onto the shaft, but then I saw the housing for the cross shaft? has also two wheel bearings that have to be changed. Do they also go out with a hydraulic press? And from which side?
See the pictures I added. In the books that I have it is not written.

Thank you guys,
Conrad

Suggest you remove the old sector shaft seal.

35-36 steering box sector seal : CR 11209
Your local Bearing Distributors should have the seal.
Believe the sector shaft hole is through hole so doesn't matter which way to install or remove the needle bearings.

Conrad, hope all is well in northern Germany, good for you to have an old Ford to tinker with.

The " cross shaft", is known as the sector shaft in Ford lingo. As Terry pointed out, its the same bore so push them out of either side. A real press would be nice, but that housing is short enough to do with a decent vice, they should not be too tight.

A big socket or what ever fits to get them out, but to push the new ones in try to find a very good fit as the ends of the bearing shell are thin.

Heat the housing with a heat gun and chill the bearings. Doing this you may be able to push them in easily with apiece of wood and small hammer. Just make sure you have a good sight line so they go in straight and not start off cocked to one side.

Great help guys, thanks so far!
I just got out the sector shaft seal.

Is it possible that this cork sealing is the right one for the old metal one? It was included in the set and until now I don't know where to put it :-)
It's the only one left and it fits perfect over the sector shaft.
Thanks, Conrad

You pulled an old leather seal out of that hole. Replace it with the modern seal I mentioned above.
