Rear Hub Grease Seal Removal

What’s the easiest way to remove rear hub grease seals?

Banging the drum on concrete can eventually work, but it can mess up the concrete and/or the drum. (It worked a few years back on a different Model A, but I don’t want to do this again.)

I tried drilling a hole in the seal to insert a screw (as someone suggested on this forum in the past), but that didn’t really work for me.

Today, I used a grease seal removal tool, but it was super hard to get the grease seal out. I eventually clawed away at it for almost an hour until I broke off enough small chunks of the seal and could get a screwdriver behind it and hit the screwdriver with a hammer.

Surely, there has to be a better way. [emoji1751]

I have one more to go on this car.

By the way, would the antiseize that I use on spark plugs be helpful for the next round of greasing the rear bearings?

Tom, thanks for the idea. I didn’t have a chunk of unserviceable axle shaft; so, I improvised with a 7/8” socket (2 1/2“ tall) and a small pry tool. It came apart in a few minutes, instead of in an hour. [emoji4]

I don’t mind ruining the grease seal as long as I can get it removed fairly easily.

I am with you Y-Blockhead, I used a slide hammer and hook adapter. Came out in a few whacks but you need to make sure the drum is anchored pretty good otherwise the slide hammer energy goes to moving the drum….

You put the drum on the ground on a couple of 4x4s and stand on it, pulling the slide hammer up. You better make sure that you have a good grip on the seal, though, 'cause if the slide hammer slips out of the seal and comes upwards...
