'36 king pin installation issues

We're working on a '36, rebuilding the stock brakes, suspension, steering, etc. The king pins that came off the car were toast. We got 2 NOS kits. We're running into a few issues.

- we have 2 opposite king pins, but both marked L. We saw this on 2 others as well. Seems to be wrongly stamped. Anyone ever run into this?

- what's the correct king pin setup? We know where the thrust bearing goes, but which side goes up? Those that came off the car had the 'open' side up, so the flange of the king pin's 'cup' rests on the inner part of the bearing. But I read somewhere here that the closed side should go up.[emoji848]

- Should we put shims under the thrust bearing so it's pre-loaded?

- how is the washer installed? Ridge up? Does the felt washer rest in that metal washer?

Thanks.

Also, I highly recommend that you have the bushings reamed/honed out on a machine with a mandrel that is long enough to pick up BOTH bushings at the same time. I've taken mine to machine shops that have Sunnen hones with the correct mandrels.

Closed side up on the thrust bearings.
Cupped washer over the felt washer.
In both cases imagine them being sprayed with water. You want the water to shed away rather than sitting in them.

On '36 and earlier the shims go under the thrust bearing. They need to be set up so the load is on the thrust bearing and not between the spindle and the bottom of the axle. Usually sort this out without the metal washer and felt in place and with the snout of the spindle on a jack stand to load the thrust bearing.
