'34 Pickup Rear Brakes

It's been a while since my last post. I recently made some time to clean up the rear mechanical brakes on my '34 pickup. When it comes time to install the new adjusters, is there a trick to installing the adjuster grease cap?

I pushed one grease cap out by turning the adjuster shaft all the way in. The cap popped off (albeit with a little help from a chisel). However, it looks a little tricky getting the new grease cap in. It's almost like an interference fit.

Do I need to enlarge the hole the cap goes in and then peen the edges over the new cap?

PS: Does anyone know a good source for the brake shoe springs? I tried Chuck's Trucks and Joe's Antique Auto Parts, but no luck. Third Gen, my usual go-to guy, does not answer the phone or emails.

Thanks!
John

Try thirdgen again as he has other, higher, priorities until very recently.

Unless you are planning on fording a river, consider leaving off those replacement grease caps. Otherwise you will have to bore out the shoulder in the housing and then peen over the housing edges to keep the cap in place.

I have had good luck pushing out the old cleaning the retaining groove and putting some RTV in the groove and installing the replacement.

David and Terry,
Thank you for the replies and info. I am going to do a combination of the two suggestions. I'll clean out the existing shoulder then if they don't fit, I'll either peen over the edges or I'll trim just a tad off the replacement caps. I'll add RTV if needed.

Cheers!
John

Thank you for the suggestion. I'll send Southside an email with a list of the parts I need.

I appreciate the offer and may take you up on it. Let me see what Southside has to say.
