Vacuum wiper fail

I have some improvement in wiper function after installing the dealer optional vacuum assisted fuel pump for larger trucks. The trico electro vac can be noisy I was told but is the ultimate solution. In trucks Electric wipers were an option by 51-52 I think.

RalphG, does your Merc have the dual diaphragm fuel/vacuum pump? I thought they were standard equipment for 1952 models. I have also wondered whether adding a vacuum reservoir would hold enough vacuum to operate the wipers through an acceleration event. Hope to see a video soon of your improved wipers.
The Merc has the same basic pump as all the other Ford flatheads I've ever seen. No vacuum on it. I'll have to see if I can find that vacuum accumulator tank off the old truck. Just out of curiosity.

I think I remember seeing a thread somewhere that said Ford offered a vacuum tank as an accessory during the '46-'48 period.

52' and 53' cars, that came with power brakes, had a vacuum tank, that was located under the drivers side floor, attached to the frame. The vacuum came from the back of the carburetor.

Mercury's with vacuum wipers, came with the dual action fuel pumps. The vacuum, was the bottom part the the carburetor. The pump mounts in the same location as the single action pump.

Hi, I made a vacuum tank out of pvc pipe (your choice of size pipe, I used 6") , threaded end cap for check valve inlet side and fitting for outlet side, glued end caps on and painted black. Then you can hide it somewhere not seen. Cheap and efficiently tank that works. Saw the article in Hot Rod mag years ago.

If I ever find the tank off the old 46 Ford truck I'll take a picture of it to post here. As I recall it was just attached to the firewall behind the engine.

Ralph I shot a plastic syringe full of Marvel mystery oil into my wiper vacuum line, when I got in my car I had a red puddle on my floor. The line from firewall to the wiper had small cracks. Needless to say I had to replace the line.

I would think if there was a serious vacuum leak that it would affect the running of the engine. This one runs as smooth and even as I could ever want.
