Installed the rear windows in the 40 Tudor. Is there a better reason than ash flicking to have a window that slides rearward to open a gap at the front?

I miss that front vent window more than I miss having a clutch.

I'm digressing here, I miss having some kind of shift lever, be it for an automatic or manual. The dial turn shift thingy is brutal. Also, dangerous as I have found myself thinking I was in park but was in reverse. I believe those dial shifts came from the manufacturer cutting cost while the price of the car has risen.

Wing windows: yes I do miss the regulated real air ventilation. Maybe some of what I like about these old units. Fresh air not a bad thing! I did not know about these sliding windows. So I learned something today! Not all wasted!:)
Regards,
Chris

Times two on what Seth Swoboda said. I miss having a "car", not suv that you can get in & out of without banging your head etc. 2008/9 Taurus & Sable were almost as good as our early V8s in that respect.

No need to touch the glass. The first turn of the window crank moved the glass rearward automatically. Same when rolling the window up...the last crank of the window crank moved the glass forward. Pretty amazing...huh!

Merry Christmas!
Pat

I read somewhere about how they designed those rear windows to open like that for flow-thru ventilation. I can't remember where I read it though?

I liked the design of the '39 sedan hinged rear windows that unlocked and pushed out. Guessing by '40 eliminating those was a "cost saving" innovation!!

Seth, I'm in 100% agreement with you. I have a 2020 Explorer with the dial and it's a terrible feature.

They weren’t eliminated in 40. The rear quarter windows in the 40 Tudor slide back for ventilation. The Fordor had the swing out windows in the very rear behind the door glass. This was on the Deluxe 40 , the Standard had a fixed window back there.

Yeah, I guess.

My 38 does the same thing. But often not well without some finger-pinching glass lifting & dropping help. Even my newer power window stuff often needs finger-pinching help.

So I prefer straight up& down windows stuff. Not this new-fangled slide forward backward at the same time window stuff.

Aw, you haven't lived until you've had a 55 or 6 vicky. those back windows do some wild stuff. They start by dropping only the back out of sight , then they move the glass to the rear and finally the front edge goes down. Quite the thing to behold. Tim

And the ventilator feature makes the fine-tuning adjustment of the window regulator a big PITA. Everything has to be just right for the regulator to transition from up-down to back-forth movements.
