Fuze to heater motor, How strong?

I just installed a new heater motor and how strong can I use? I have not got my book to tele yet. Slow coming I guess. It had a 8 gauge fuze in line.

My '55 Merc manual says 20 amp, T-Bird would be the same. That's for a 6 volt system, if it's now 12 volts I would use a 15 amp fuse.

Yes,
In my '57 shop manual (since I don't have a '56) the heater motor current draw is listed as 5 amps, with a 14 amp inline fuse from the Acc terminal of the Ignition switch..

Ok that works now with the new heater motor. I have taken the radio out to get to the Dash Light to change the bulb. Still does not work will have to follow the wire to see where it goes. there power in the door button that turn on the dash light. I got both doors open and no light? The radio hot wire was not plug in that was the problem so far with it. however wired this dash should be shot or a swift kick in the rear. This wiring job is shameful I half to say. It will take time but I will straight it out.

If the wiring is that bad I would seriously consider rewiring the car. Cobbled wiring and old, brittle insulation is a time bomb.

Stand by, I'm working on a copy of the map light wiring diagram that I can attach here...

The map light should work off the door when open? Now I am guessing. That the only light that it could be. There no other light in the car that I seen.

Yes, the dash courtesy light works off of the door switches, and the switch on the fixture itself.
There aren't any other original courtesy light fixtures.

From the attached wiring diagram... (it's for a '55 but it should be the same, or exceptionally similar)

Power comes from a 9 amp glass fuse on the back of the headlight switch, with two Green w/ yellow stripe Courtesy Light power wires coming off of it.
One power wire goes to the switch on the map light, and the right hand door switch.
The other power wire goes to the left hand door switch then up to the map / courtesy light, bypassing the manual switch on the front of the fixture.
The power 'output' of each door switch is also connected to the other.
