8RT Valve guides stuck

Howdy all,
Back in November I was able to remove all the valves from the 8RT, but most of the valve guides stayed in. I was unable to pry them up or down with the pickle fork, and the KD 8(something) tool was no help on them either. (Yes, the horseshoe clips are all out)
A couple nights ago I was able to pound one down into the "valley" using a spark plug socket and 3 pound hammer.
Was that the right thing to do? Or do they need to be removed from the top?

(Now to find where that missing exhaust valve went:()

That's about all you can do, but heat or acetone to seep down to the seals usually helps. The machine shop I go to uses an air chisel, many smaller hits vs one big whack.

If the guides are no good and will not be reused you can drive them down into the valley to get them out. If you still have lifters in place and not enough room to drive the guide all the way down and out a quick smack on the protruding end of the guide with a hammer and chisel will break the end of it off and you can then drive it the rest of the way out.

Pound them all out. Rotate the engine to maximize clearance with the lifters if they are still in their bores. You will replace the guides
anyway and this way is much faster.

I found the missing exhaust valve, it was in my neighbor's yard.
I was mowing grass and took a sharp turn in her yard and as I pulled out of the turn I saw it lying on the grass. I guess the valve had fallen onto the mower deck, and rolled out of sight until I took that sharp corner!

That is funny! :)

I know this is an old thread but to add for future searchers, I use a regular guide driver that I purchased to use on my 45 solo model Harley Davidson motor (another flathead but not Ford). Any guide driver for that size valve stem will fit. I've also seen the 11/32" guide drivers with the .401 chuck for air hammer use.
