Oil Pan Gasket at Timing

Hi,

Ready to install the oil pan on my 1930 coupe. There is a small step (.005-.010") where the front timing cover meets the block due to rope seal pressure. Will be using the Snyder's cork gasket that specifies no sealant. Will the gasket seal this step or should I loosen the timing cover and try to realign?

Thanks,
Jerry

I always use a small dab of sealer where the gasket parts (ends) meet, and a small dab over the small step should be OK.

What sealer do you use?

Usually something like Permatex black silicone. I've used several different sealers, such as Indian Head and Permatex type 2, red silicone, etc. Used correctly, many will do the job just fine. Just don't use too much or it can get inside the engine and cause problems. On the outside it just looks ugly, but it can be wiped off by rubbing with your fingers or a rag.

If you're working on a pan gasket while the engine is installed, then a thin coat of 3M weatherstrip adhesive works well to hold the gasket to the block.
