Briggs Body Number. No such thing?

Doesn't there just come a time when you just call the VIN the engine number and move on? If needed they sell punch sets so you can create your own number.

I know what road rage is, and I assume there is a term for the same type of rage when dealing with the DMV.

The title for my Phaeton describes it as a 4 Dr. Sedan, and when I register it and get a new title for my state there is no way on earth I am going to ask for that to be corrected. The engine number agrees with the VIN on the title so to me that's all that counts.

Hi Joe,

Also when the inspection deputy saw my installed, 1929 motor number, (in lieu of the original 1930 motor number on my title), , DMV recorded my "original" 1930 Coupe as a 1929 Coupe in their written correspondence letters.

When I called DMV about not having an all "original" 1930 Coupe with a 1929 title, their response was, "Sorry, these are the rules."

This year appears to be the first year one sees so many working citizens, nation wide, finally expressing being fed up with our ever increasing Government Control.

Looks like a movement today. Most of the seemingly "untouchable" candidates today "up in the clouds", who are receiving Government Checks, or who have formally received Government Checks are wondering "WHY?". LOL
.
Hang in there Joe and do not give up.

Thanks again to all you guys for your responses.
To the guys local to me.
I went to the White Bear Lake DMV. I was the only one in there at the time.
Nice lady helped me fill out all the paper work. They can not issue a title.
They had to send it into the main State office for the title..
They want me to bring the car in to the state inspection site so they can look over the car.
Well that's gonna be a while, since the car is completely dismantled.
I'm just going have to take this matter on a day to day basis.

Hi Joe,

Sound's much better that she eased your pain in "the you know what." LOL

In my opinion, keep in touch with the nice lady .... every very large organization has some who are willing to assist ....... just like with my nice lady ..... somewhat difficult to find at times ...... but the answer can remain "NO" .......... unless you do not give up and continue to:

"Ask, And It Will Be Given To You."

Time to celebrate!

I have 2 1930 Model A Fords, one a coupe and one a pickup.. I had no trouble getting a title for the coupe. The pickup was another story I had to submit the title form 5 times each time they wanted different information that was clearly on the form. After 5 attempts I finally got the title. Don't give up even though its a hassel.

All these are nice stories of perseverance in spite of insurmountable odds. But one thing that all the stories have are that you, the owner, had all the information needed to get the job done. This is not the case here. He needs to fill out the PS2000-43 form and on the form he needs a VIN. He does not have a VIN. He has no motor and as such no engine number to use as a VIN like was done in the day and for model A's still done. He cannot read the frame number, a "copy" of the engine number as built.

So what does that leave, Legally, above board, what the DMV in MN expects, nothing. He hi dead in the water. I see no provisions for a "built from parts" title. He has nothing to provide the State that his car was ever a vehicle that was on the road.

OK, with that out of the way, get a motor either stamped with a number during the period in which the bill of sale states (1930) or get an engine and frame stamped with that number and check with a "friend" such as Tow companies, automobile dealers, government entities, attorneys, financial institutions and insurance companies qualified under the Federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) can access Minnesota motor vehicle information. Minnesota motor vehicle information is searchable by VIN, tag or title number to see if its clear.

Armed with that information, the engine number list from one of the national clubs, the picture of the location of the numbers and a picture of the actual numbers, go into the DMV confidently and ask for a title.

Hi Joe,

Just hope reading this one (1) of many past experiences below, (during the past 20 years on another Model A Forum), helps you ........... so you do not feel like the Lone Ranger with your "pain in the you know what" in dealing with Government workers in DMV. LOL

And, I might add, the registry people at the Boston Office are neither helpful nor friendly.

I was just down there last week getting a new registration and title --- a very costly and ugly experience.

============================================================

I had a very similar experience with the MASS Registry. The Commonwealth requires that a vehicle be registered within 30 days of transferal of ownership, which I tried to do.

But every time I went to the Registry, they wanted another piece of paperwork (existing title, notified bill of sale, proof of personal property tax being paid by previous owner, certificate of mileage from previous owner). The car was originally from Virginia and sold at Carlisle to a dealer from Connecticut, so all this paperwork was a nightmare.

The final kicker was that, by the time I got the paperwork in order, the time that had elapsed was 8 months and I was assessed a fine for submitting it late.

Additionally, the Registry agent arrogantly said that she was going to flag the application for an audit (implying I had a "hot" car?).

The point is that I tried to do things the proper way, but after all was said and done, I would have gladly paid $300 to get a fixed title.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The big difference in workers assisting customers is that with just one (1) complaint, a private company like Wal-Mart would have terminated this arrogant "beech" ..... far as we know, this "beech was probably promoted and now heads DMV like the rude DMV head lady I encountered 20 years ago ....... building permit offices are not too much different. LOL

Laurel and Hardy gave us all a good example of what not to seriously expect in life. LOL

I agree with T. W. Go to the smaller DMV sites I took both my Model T and my Model A to Mora to get bonded titles and the worked with me on whatever numbers we could find on the vehicles. When the body number on the Model A didn't match the engine, they went with the body number. The Model T didn't have any visible fram number and the body was off so they used the engine number. It was 60 miles away but worth the travel.

I'm suffering the same thing with a boat title. It's been three years and just yesterday, I was sent home from the MVA , with my 1/2 thick folder in my hands. All because I didn't have the "Turn down" letter from Harrisburg, from a previous application. The lady was very nice about it, But rules are rules! (Grrrrrrr) The boat in this case is a 1966 aluminum, 14', Big frigging deal! I have l have a letter from the former owner's wife saying that she gave all the paperwork she had and there is no title. H- burg says there was a title (1966? I don't think so!) So we're fighting it out over this detail. The main problem is that all title apps must go to H-burg. (By courier no less. What a sweet little political gig that is. $50 @ on MV titles. My boat title goes to Fish and Game. Little different, not much though) So , I'm with you on the frustration train. I know how obtuse these people can be. And it would be good to toss much of this stuff out, but it makes work for the third arm of the law enforcement industry, the lawyers (First arm- the Cops, Second arm, the courts and judges.)

I am reminded of a case where the state of Mass. prosecuted Gerald Amirault and his sisters and mother of sexual misconduct with children at their nursery. At least one of them is still in jail (20 + Years) when the prosecutions methods have been totally discredited. People wonder how the Salem Witch Trials could go for so long. I know how Mass. could let them go on so long, because they're still doing it. They're still willing to believe in such nonsense and prosecute on what children will say when they're coached and pressured to say something. And having no knowledge of the consequences to others.
This demonstrates the utter contempt that some Govt people have for us. "I'm Right and no matter what anyone says I'm still right!) No matter how ludicrous the charges, or how much proof that someone else brings to the contrary.
Terry
PS Gerald Amirault was released after 18 years. That's 18 yrs he can never get back! What have we allowed ourselves to become?

I have found that once you find someone who is truely helpful it is best to get the ball rolling and get it over with as quickly as possible. If you wait the helpfulness may fade into a memory. Rod

I had to get my '40 inspected when transferring from MN to AZ title. They couldn't comprehend that their was not a VIN tag on the body; that the number was on the frame. "I'm not certified to read frame numbers" was the response. So I got online on the DMV site and emailed someone with an important sounding title and suggested that he needed to train his clerks better. Wow! That lit a fire! I soon got a call from the local inspector to bring the car in. She said she had to look at the "secret number" stamped in the frame. I said they're not so secret and told her where they were. But she had me drive into her inspection stall, sent me outside and closed the door while she did her "secret" inspection. You can only see the frame number under the hood. The other two require lifting the body. But after about 15 minutes she opened the bay door and said I was good to go! Funny!

FWIW:

With my last Model A title resort with my disassembled Coupe, and my District Judge's Court Order, DMV told me about going to their "DMV Special Title Section", which incidentally had very few workers inside locked behind closed, security doors.

When I met with this lady, she asked me in order to avoid future Model A title problems, to please stamp the original Ford Number on the frame where it can be easily seen by a Deputy in the future without removing the body.

After having two (2) separate trained deputy inspectors come over, at different times to look at my Model A frame number and engine numbers, I can attest to the fact that if I would have had a Stanley Steamer in my garage with a non-standard 16 cylinder industrial engine, in lieu of a Model A, neither one would have known the difference.

Laurel and Hardy really had it all together.
