It was no point gap !!

Well after not starting for about a month and missing our town's Christmas Parade I finally figured out why. No point gap. I only spent a couple hours total but finally found it. Sometimes I guess we find out the hard way. Got new plugs and coil also but that was not it. What threw me off was the points are not that old and are not burnt. It appears the point tab that sits on the cam lobe kind of deteriorated. My question is what points are best to buy. Joe B.

I get my points and condenser from Snyder's never a problem with them . Also as Mitch said , use cam lube.

They say to check your point gap after the first 500 miles on a new set. I did not do this and got caught just like you on a club tour.

Here is a handy tool I found to do a quick check on your points. Most vendors have them. This picture is from Bratton's catalog.

The rubbing block wears, some of the new cheaper points the block wears faster. The points should be readjusted after a few hundred miles.

The cam could be rough if its a new one and wearing the block.

Yep, they need to be lubed.

yes cam surface condition and they need to be rechecked after some use..

$28.95

$28.95 !

Can't one buy several life time supplies of complete feeler sets for that. In the day when everyone smoked they would just use a paper match book cover.

For a road side fix, a calibrated eyeball works just fine. ;)

Been turning wrenches for damn near 60 years now, both my eyes and my wrists are calibrated.
Now the main frame is another story.

I buy my cams from A&L There great! A simple test.... after you adjust your points put your finger on the other side of the cam and give it a little push,Did the point gap change?
If it did then your shaft bushings are worn.

I have had good points and mediocre points. I have found that I prefer the points from NAPA.

You may want to look at how this tool works and see how it compares to your feeler sets. Saves retiming and/or getting the crank out!

I like the "idea" of the tool, but the "idea" of paying $30 for it does not thrill me.
Seem $10 - $15 would be more inline.
