Help with Block ID

What do you mean by hard to drive? Is it one of those things where you need to have the motor RPM match the gear you want to shift too?

Truck serial# is 537302
Guessing thats the same as the engine#?

Screptre,
That is about the right Serial # for a 42 or war
time 99 (239ci) engine (and truck SN). Is that the SN stamped on left frame rail? Should have "99" as part of SN prefix.
Will have to dig deeper to confirm that yours
is the factory original engine block. Pull head.

Thanks for sharing w pictures.

G32,

I'll check the passenger side frame rail.

Don't remember seeing anything but I havent looked close.

Now with the time change its close to dark by the time i get home from work... UGH.

The numbers are often very difficult to find and/or read, sometimes taken somewhat extreme measures to read. They are there!

It is a good trans.
The same gears were in the Dodge 4 speed (New Process)(as in WC series 3/4 ton military) and after WWII, Clark used them, I don't know who else.

I wouldn't consider that transmission a good candidate for an OHV engine upgrade, but maybe that's just me!

Sorry JSeery, I hadn't taken a re power on board. I agree with you.
What I meant was that in an original situation the crash box did a fine job.

Motors is out, found 29A on the RH head.

Heavy rust on cylinder walls, few of them had some water in them. Valves are nasty.

Haven't taken a look at the crank yet, maybe tomorrow.

Is this block worth the time if the crank looks decent? Or if the crank looks nasty use it as a boat anchor?

All of what you are looking at means very little, the issue is any cracks in the block. It needs to be taken apart and pressure tested if there are no visible cracks.

I looked closely at the block after taking off the heads, didn't see any cracks. Going to soak the cylinders with Pb blaster for a few days and clean the decks and look some more.

It will require a machine shop (or someone with the required equipment) to pressure test the block. That is the only real way to tell anything.

Sceptre:
Sorry about the crack---could you post a picture of it? May be usable parts for
someone.
Could please you please confirm that the block is a 99 (239)? Still an exercise in
block identity. Thanks man!

99 239ci block has round center water transfer port with trangle port above &
trapezoid lower port
81 series blocks have trapezoid center port --same upper & lower as 239.

59 blocks have round center & lower transfer ports.

You have an interesting vehicle MH and all.

Thanks !
