Help with Block ID

If only one cylinder is cracked and all the valve pockets & pan rails are good, it could be a good candidate for a sleeve. The prewar blocks had the thickest walls of all the flathead V8s. If it was a freeze crack then you will likely find a crack in a pan rail too. I'm not sure what machine shops are charging now but the general price was around $100 a bore.

If I followed through with the block I'd be having the cylinders bored at least 40 over. I noticed that someone already relieved the block at some point. The bummer of it all is that the truck only shows 5400 miles on it. So if this is the original motor it doesn't have much use on it. Haven't yet cracked the crash box open yet to take a peek. I had issues splitting the two. The spline doesnt want to let go of the clutch just yet. Been spraying it with PB blaster once a day. I'll give it another shot soon.

So I tried splitting the ****** and Motor again with no luck. Am I missing something?? I've taken all the bell housing bolts out, clutch forks move etc... I can only manage to split the case maybe 3/8 of an inch and it seems to be spring loaded. Is the spline just stuck in the clutch or am I missing something?? Don't want to pry to hard and break something.

Any info is appreciated.

Many of the motors made for trucks were relieved. They work good with aftermarket crow foot chambered heads. With those motors, you can bore way out there.

If all the bolts are out, the spline is likely corroded and causing a hang up with the clutch disk. If that truck had the access port on the bottom of the oil pan for an 11 inch clutch, you can remove that to gain access to the flywheel but I don't know if you can get the clutch cover bolts out or not.

Sceptre 155, any luck unsticking it? I am dealing with the same issue with the same engine! Sideshift ****** though. Engine is stuck so I can't turn it to remove the clutch bolts. Thanks for any info. Luke

Well it's been awhile since I've looked at this thread. Nope, I never did get it apart. Life took over this year and I had to put the truck on hold. But the good news is that I'm just about ready to pull this truck into the garage and start finally working on her. I did pickup another 46 1.5 ton this year that I've torn down to the frame. I'm going to end up using some body panels and the cab from the 46 to restore the 42. It came with a 59a thats in really decent shape. If I can get away with honing out the cylinders and doing a valve job I'm tempted to use that motor instead. But a strange part of me wants to keep the truck as close to original and rebuild the 29A as long as nothing else is cracked and I can get away with just putting in a sleeve. We'll see, I need to be realistic and not throw away $$ just to say its the original motor. Did you ever get your ****** off??? I'm going to give it another crack soon. I've been keeping an eye out for parts over the last year or so. Seems those 4 speed ******'s are really not all that rare. Everyone seems to swap them out for T5's or an entire power plant setup. So plenty are just laying around. Breaking the ****** isnt the end of the world.
