reliable fuel gauge sender

I took my baby out on the expressway this weekend to test out the new Columbia. I ran slap out of gas and pulled over to the shoulder. Now, I have a new Drake sender (grounded to the frame) that usually will read all over the map when I fill up and it will settle out after a bit, but it showed a 1/4 tank when the car sputtered to a stop. Lucky we have an emergency service vehicle that is sponsored by an insurance company that happened to show up with some free gas. Fella said mine was the oldest car he had ever helped. Wanted his picture taken with it, front and rear!
My investigation on this forum concerning this problem hasn't been too encouraging either, as it seems there are many with the same issue. Short of carrying a can of gas in the boot at every outing, what is the permanent fix for this annoying situation? "Finding" an old King Seely unit has not proved fruitful either.

Despite what some folks claim, I don't think there is a "an accurate working replacement" for the OEM King Seely sending unit as the KS unit does not operate on the same principle as the newer replacements. The only permanent fix is to take your old OEM unit out and "tinker" with it until it works. I don't know of any company that can repair the OEM unit. I guess it would be possible to install a newer sending gauge with matching gauge under your dash.

C & G carries a great working, 6Volt sender that includes excellent installation instructions. Just installed one. Works great. Cost about $38.00

There is a guy that post on the Barn fairly frequently that advertises that he repairs the original units.

I sent you a PM regards a source for a fuel sender. He did have two a NOS one which I brought and a good used one . If this doesn't work out for you there is a company which makes new ones but I haven't explored price with them. Now that I have my one sorted I am very happy with the gauge and accuracy of this -Karl

The original King Seeley fuel level sending units can be repaired, usually. I have had many customers tell me that the aftermarket units are unreliable.

Well go figure.... Filled up tonight and gauge shows empty - so I also need one. Checked c&g and it looks just like drake - which I had no luck with. So if anyone has a good working one they want to sell or know of one please send me a pm

Thanks in advance
