Hogshead 6 vs V8

Is there any difference in the hogshead used on the 6 cyl and V8 trucks using the granny 4 speed? Or is the difference at the front of the half bell? Thanks,
Howard

Thanks Ross, I'm on the road and plan on stopping at a guys place that has a lot of flathead stuff, none labeled, all as removed from years of collecting parts vehicles. He assures me he's got several and since one of our charter Barn members wants one, I figured I'd pick one up for myself too.

Might look at VanPelt and Wilcap sites. There are different hogsheads, but I'm not sure what the different one mate up with. The major difference is in the distance from the front mounting surface to the rear mounting surface. The one most people want is the common one, I have never even seen the other one.

I have a couple 6 cylinder intermediate bell housings. Guys on E-Bay don't know what they're selling?

The first two attachments are the one most folks are interested in, 2 3/4 depth. The last one is the odd-ball (to me) and is much deeper.

Thanks guys, I thought the front of the 1/2 bell would be the difference. JSERRY, I never heard of the odd hogshead you show. The depth and clutch release lever are the telltail differences. I've got enough info to make sure I get the right one. Thanks again.

The extra deep one is for 1932-34 truck 4 speed. The piece you need is late 40's into the early 50's that unbolts off the transmission. Most of the 35 to early 40's were part of the transmission case.
Last one I got was off a well drilling rig that was powered by a 4 cyl ford industrial

Agree, VanPelts drawings says 40 thru 51, but think that may be a missprint. Think it is more like 48-51 (not sure on the dates, but late 40s).

If the one in the picture is what you're talking about, 01T specifically denotes 1940 Truck, so NOT a mis-print. DD

So, does anyone have a trick to driving the pin out of the clutch fork?? Looks to me like drilling a hole in the bottom of the hogshead (right under the pin) is the only way with any hope.

That's the part number, but they seem to all be on the later trucks. Several sources list them as being used on the later years. Do you have any idea if they were commonly used on the earlier years? Guess it doesn't much matter as they all have the same part number (as far as I know). Once they are off the truck where it came from doesn't make any difference LOL.

Checked the Green Book and it skips from 7503 to 7506, just curious.

7505 MOST LIKELY doesn't show-up because it constitutes an "assembly" of parts, and not ONE individual part. Same kind of situation with the early trans cases.....7006 I believe on the case, but a 7005 "assembly" with the bushings as it is bought across the counter.

Also, the '40 thru '47 or so big TRUCKS are so rare today as compared to the late '40s-up. DD

When I said late 40's its from experience parting out trucks and were they were more commonly found in 1946 to 52 1-1/2 ton trucks. The earlier ones all seamed to have had the 1 piece transmission cases. There was never a market at the time from complete 4 speeds so the ones with the bolt on hogsheads got pulled and the rest scraped. At the time I was doing it all I had to do was out bid the scrapyards for the whole trucks. I salvaged what the others would have just. Crushed.

I think I still have a couple of the hogsheads, what are they worth?

There is another half bell that looks identical at first glance to the 01T-7501 half bell. It is for the '48-'52 T98 Syncro-Silent 4 speed. IIRC it is marked T8D-1 1/2 inside. The hole for the bearing retainer is 1/8" larger than the retainer hole in the 01T-7501. It is the same depth face to face 2 3/4". The bolt patterns on both faces are the same also.

Took one apart not that long ago. Seems I just rotated the fork and drove it out.
