My generator on mine is bad. When it just idle's it puts out 0 amp's. I drove it around the block and notice, when I give it gas it will put out 10 amp but it never charged the battery and its brand new. I am thinking about getting this one is this a good one?

if its putting out 10 amps it should be charging the battery. at idle it is normal to show no amps. are you having a problem with your battery going dead? maybe you have a draw when the car sits

Well thats a good thing just saved me some money going to have to get aswitch for the battery. I do have some exposed wires in the junction box.

I ran a 6 volt alternator on Minerva. Even with a 5 year old, group 1 battery, she ALWAYS started with a quick whiz, because the battery was ALWAYS fully charged. When I started her, most friends thought she was on 12 VOLTS!

I use a 6 volt alternator as I was tired of worrying whether the generator was putting enough back to the battery. I use headlights early morning and evening for safety. The alternator gives me peace of mind. It's money well spent and reliable.

I have been using a 6 volt alternator with great success for ten years, but I was considering putting the generator back on with a CVR, for the looks only, but now I am looking into purchasing the new alternator that is built into a generator housing with the cut out box on top for "original" appearance. Its cost is keeping me just looking though.

My horn would barely groan at idle with a generator. With the alternator it ahoogahs any time.

With all this talk praising alternators, I'm only here to give to give a different opinion.

Unless there is a real reason such as an extra large electrical load there is no reason to use the alternator. A good properly working generator with a good original cut-out along with one of Tom's regulators is all thats required and as bullet-proof as one can get.

Of course, this is just my opinion so we know what thats worth. Its worth what you paid for it.

From your description the generator is working fine, an alternator may not "fix" your problem

my original generator has been more reliable than the alternator in my chevy truck---the chevy alternator has been rebuilt 3 times in 35 years of owning it, the A generator hasn't been apart

If you read the owners instruction book you would know that the generator won't show a charge at idle, and it will show discharge with the lights on as normal operation

I have been running a 6 volt alternator since they became available, never had a problem with it,battery is always up.

Since Vermin's starter & generator "appear" to be freshly REBUILT, I'll try to keep him "original". I did opt for an OPTIMA 6 volt battery. After he's running, I may install Tom's EVR. (I've NEVER heard of one of them FAILING!)

well there is a lot of pros and some good cons. I dont plan on showing it were you have to have orginal parts, I am not worried about that. I just want it to drive and have fun and go to shows from time to time.

It doesn't seem as though your generator is bad, it seems to be doing its job. Since you mentioned the battery is new, I'm wondering if it was charged before usage. The store you bought it from probably didn't charge it and many people just stick them in and go, so it'll take a lot to get it charged. Stick it on a low amp charger for awhile and see what happens.

Also I'd suggest getting a test light and checking for a draw. If there is a draw, I'd recommend fixing that before sticking in a disconnect switch.

For me and my coupe, the only way to fly as it is very trustworthy. Alternator has been on the car for 8 years now, no trouble. The car is driven, never will be a show car and I love the fact that the 6v battery is lasting so much longer.

Just my input. Happy to see any "A" on the road with anything that makes the owner happy.

Be well -

My generator is 87 years old and my 6 volt battery is over 12 years old, and everything starts and works great, including the horn. Can't beat the reliability of a good generator.

Whether you have an Alt or a gen, both work when they do and both won't if they are broken.

There is no reason to change from one to the other just because.

Has anyone had experience with a PowerMaster alternator? I saw one on a car, and I was sure it was a generator.

MODEL A TIMES reviewed the PowerMaster Alternator in its most recent edition, favorably.

I liked the idea, but found $400 too expensive for me to get one just to replace my present 6 volt alternator with PowerMaster due to its "generator appearance".
