Gentlemen, I am flushing out a 53 merc flathead and have Zerex G-05 antifreeze by Valvoline. Ethylene glycol is the first ingredient. Is this OK to use? Thanks, Bob Sacramento

I believe that is the first ingredient in most Engine antifreeze.
As Lawson said plus keep it away from pets as it tastes sweet and wil poison them as well.
Torchie.

Ethylene glycol is a animal killer. Dogs, cats even children will drink it since it tastes sweet. Also it will ruin babbot bearings in older engines(Ford 1935 and back) if it happens to get in the pan. Propalene Glycol (one brand name is Sierra) is safe for both animals and engines.

One of the things I had in mind with my 1935 Ford with a high performance Ford Flathead engine (has aluminum heads and intake, brass/copper radiator and heater core and cast iron block and water pumps).

Regarding G - 05 - The question I had raise was which is better all around protection for the mix metal combo as above combo - OAT or HOAT - other?

The answer I got from a cooling engineer was - with the copper/brass radiator, iron block and aluminum heads, he recommend using traditional GREEN formula antifreeze. This older style antifreeze is not as long lived as the newer products, but it will provide better multi metal type protection for what I have. Should change it every 3 years or so because it breaks down faster.

Here is an excellent link regarding antifreeze from Wiki
