So this weekend i replaced my manifold gaskit and replaced my tilson x with an original cast iorn zenith. before, i was backfireing like mad and my bowl was worped. but she ran good and had lots of power. now it seems like shes lost some power and is running rough i origionaly set the air screw to 1 1/2 terns from seated then i opend it 1/4 more to let the get it running right. it still seems a little roughf any idears?

With the Zenith it could be any number of things. You did not mention it but is this carb recently rebuilt? The idle settings are correct but it could debris from the tank has plugged a jet or some other blockage. I would take it apart and make sure their is no debris.

How long has it been sitting in that box? Could be just as suggested, take it apart and clean all the jets. Or maybe you need to open the needle valve a bit more, not the idle adjustment.

What happens if you pull the choke a little while it's ideling? If it smooths out, then you are running too lean, and may have to move the float or unplug a jet. Hard to say without being there and without knowing what was done to the carb.

Once again this carb is mint the origonal owner bout the car in 28 then bought the carb 2nd carb (for the future) well he ended up putting a tiltson on it and thats what it ran from 35 till last week that second zenith was pased down with the car till it got to me. all the jets were clear and the float was fine and the float needle and seet were smooth.

Many "rebuilt" carbs are not properly rebuilt. Are you positive it is the carb? You said you had problems before? Possibilities are:

1. You have a problem other than the carb???
2. Your carb is clean inside so it was not correctly rebuilt
3. Your carb has been damaged since it was rebuilt maybe the float setting is off or someone ran drills or wire through the jets to see if they are clean (a NO NO).

Another thought, do you have a vac leak somewhere between manifold and w/shield wiper motor?
Paul in CT If you find fix, please let us know.

Well i think i got it with some adjustments half tern more air 1 1/4 tern on the gav nob i dont have a vacum line to m windshild whiper put a plug in there with thread sealer and im not backfireing at all any more. This carb was never rebuilt this is the first time its been ran ever... never been installed on a car untill now. but seems like its working good now.

If it takes 1 1/4 turn on GAV to get good running, you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere; the motor is demanding extra fuel to balance the air that is leaking in.

Agree with Steve. Squirt carb cleaner around the manifold connection to the block or anywhere else air leaks can occur and see if the engine races up.

I did it with WD40 nuthing changed. but she seems ok i think im going to night im going to take her for decent drive to test it out.
