Y Block

Hello all,

Can anyone enlighten me, I have a ECG block that had been bored to 3.75". The piston journal on the crank (terminology?) measures 2.18. I believe this is the stock measurement for the crank.

The question is, does anyone know what the limitations for piston bore on this motor typically would be?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

If you haven't found it yet, John Mummert's site has a ton of info.

There's more at Ted Eaton's site. eatonbalancing.com, I think.

y blocks forever is anothe site.

For any block in particular,a sonic test is your best bet. Lots of these had some core shift affecting wall thickness.

An ECG block was a 272, w/ 3.62 bore.
3.75 is the 'standard' 292 bore. That's a fair amount over the usual 272 oversize (3.68" = +.060)

On John Mummert's website the general tech info is in a link at the very bottom of that Home page...

standard crank and bore dimensions...

bore / displacement

But you asked, What's the max size....?......(it seems like you may already be there)
I'm not a y-block machinist / engine builder with decades of experience, so I Google'd it.

I bored my ECG (272) to 292 so I could use a set of Jahns pistons I picked up. Been running 3yrs now with no problems.

Thanks for all of the information, I appreciate it. I have a machine shop looking at it now.

I'll post with any further developments.
