I have a 56 T-Bird with a 312. Any ideas on replacing the rear main seal? Mine leaks like crazy. On a 56 T Bird, does the motor have to come out or can we do this in the car? Is there a modern kit or upgrade out there for the old rope seal? Any help or suggestions will be greatly apprecited.
Thanks
Phil

I have one 312 with a rope seal ten years old that still has not leaked its first drop. The new 312, the one with the 42 dollar rubber seal, has a wet flywheel. It does not dril oil, but I am very disapointed. Get th eold rope seal, soak it well in oil, for days. Pund it in with a big hammer on a big socket. I still think most leaks are from the aluminum lower seal holder sides.

Go for the neophrene (sp) seal. Or Best Gasket has a newer rope seal made out of better material than the old stuff.

Forget the old rope seal. Since the good stuff was taken out of them, they suck.
