Y Block PCV

Hmmmmm? I based my "act of contrition" on info I observed on eBay when I saw two Y-block valley covers, that did not have the road draft tube ports.

Bill, not all Y-Block valley covers had road draft tubes or provisions for a PCV. The car road draft was located on the side of the block.

I remember when they started requiring a PCV system they would drill a hole in the valve cover for the PCV valve and just bend over the road draft tube to block it off. Then a sealed filler cap was installed with a hose to the air cleaner.

Yes 434, you do need to weld on a baffle. I had a eight inch long peice of 1 5/8 tube laying on the bench. I cut 1 1/2 inches off at a 45*angle, and welded the two back to make a 90. I welded a flat washer on the end, and drilled the top of the tube with 1/4 inch holes, and the bottom with 1/8 inch holes. The baffle was welded to the valey pan and it no longer sucks oil.

ya gotta pic of that? sounds like a good way to do it.

FYI, my valley cover doesn't have a baffle, it's cast aluminum. Needs a baffle but I don't want to get back in there right now.

It would seem that there are a lot of variations in the Y-blocks as to it the draft tube comes out of the valley cover or the side of the block. I do know that by 1963, there is no opening on the left side of a 292 block for a draft tube..
Both of my 312 Bird engines had draft tubes in the valley cover.. The three F100 292's '59-60 that I have, have draft tubes in the valley covers.. I have installed PCV's on all five of these engines using the '64 Ford 292 truck PCV valley cover adapter and related components.
Starting in 1963 all GM engines had closed crankcases with PCV's, All vehicles also had alternators in '63.. To the best of my knowledge, Ford generally did not incorporate the PCV's into their Y-Block engines until '64.. There are probably variations in the Ford line that did have PCv's, I base my opinion on California vehicles, because California adapted very stringent rules on emissions long before the other states did.
My '57 T-Bird still has the '75 CA inspection sticker on the windshield which shows that it passed the CA emission standards with the '64 truck system installed on the engine.

I just purchased a billet oil cap with a PCV valve inside ($25) and plumbed it to the PCV port on the carb, air is drawn through the draft tube (has a filter inside...will put a finer one on) and out the PCV valve in the oil cap....simple!!!!! seems to work great.
