Y-Block 292 oil pump drive shaft question

I am attempting to install a Mallory Unilite distributor into a 1959 292 Y-Block. The engine is in the truck. I am having trouble installing the oil pump drive shaft. QUESTION: Is there an easy way to get the oil pump drive shaft to go into the oil pump and the distributor? Thanks, Jim

It shouldn't have come out when you pulled your distributor. Someone in the past didn't install the retaining clip.

The oil pump drive shaft should be installed from the bottom with the pump. There should be a clip on the shaft ~1" from the bottom to prevent the shaft from being pulled out with the distributor.

The shaft also should have a slightly beveled end that goes toward the distributor to help guide the shaft into the hole.

Though I have never tried it you may be able to put some grease on the shaft to hold it in the distributor long enough to get it in the oil pump. But if you ever have to pull it again you will be in the same position.

I'm sure there are others on here that may have different 'solutions'.

Warning to those who buy an ARP oil pump shaft; They install the retaining clip on the wrong end. Hopefully they changed this by now, I haven't bought one in a couple of years. Easy to check BEFORE you install it.

get the press on spring washer that goes around the shaft, that way if it slips out of the dist it wont go all the way into the pan, use some real heavy long fiber grease, the old time wheel bearing grease to hold shaft in the dist, put the washer up close to the dist so if it falls out you can retrieve it with a magnet, if you get the shaft down to the pump with out it coming loose and the dist wont fall all the way in place just turn engine over with starter or by hand till it does, you wont lose timing because the dist gear will be meshed with the gear on cam, just be sure you get the spring type washer that has the hole in it and teeth all the way around the inside, check with your parts store of ford dealer for the correct washer
