Wrong speedo gear??

I have 1930 2-door sedan. Speedometer reads about 30-35 mph when I know I am going at least 10 miles per hour faster. It has never read over 35 mph. It is a new speedometer(rebuilt) and the second one I have installed in this dash. Both reacted the same. The catalogs only list one speedo gear. The current one came in the car--it looks good , so does the cable. Any Ideas? Skip

If the odometer is off by the same amount you probably have the wrong gear. If the odometer is correct and the speedo is off you need to have the speedo fixed. Another check is to mark the tire and see how many revolutions of the engine it takes to turn the real wheels one time (expect about 3.78 engine revolutions to one revolution of the tires). With that information someone can tell you the number that should be on the speedo housing. The catalogs I look at list several speedo gears.

If someone put 3.54 or 3.27 ring and pinion gears in the rear end, then you need a driven speedometer gear with fewer teeth. As mentioned, you need to check the odometer first and get that accurate before you check the speedometer.

I looked through the Snyder's catalog and sure enough they have listed several configurations of teeth. Assuming that I have a "Standard rear end", am I correct then that the lesser number of teeth would register faster speeds? I'll have to count the number of teeth on my gear. Skip
