I'm going to start the process of Woodgraining my 34 Dash , what is used for the base coat, does one use a metal primer ; red oxide or light grey ? and continue with regular paints or use Acrylic Enamel paint ; and continue with them , any help from anyone that has done this process would be greatly appreciated , Thanks

, The coat after all the oxide grey primer under coat prep is done, is the base colour red or almost maroon,The maroon can be lacquer or 2K /2 pot ,if your graining medium is water base then Lacquer. If Lac solvent base then 2 K acrylic Enamel .The last coat is clear ,If lacquer then mutable coats ,if Acrylic then 3 . i will see if I can post a picture .

" D ".. Googly woodgraining paint, and you will find a load of info. with tools, paints
pictures of some done, some, " how to do it stories," stuff to download, one said to make a bench mount for the dash as you will be sanding and moving it around, drying time out of the way, ect... I think out of the car would be best? I am working on mine now .... OLD...BILL

Here is what you do: prep the metal as needed. Prime using something simple like rattle can Krylon, I use grey so I can see when I spray on the base coat if I am covering correclty. Base coat for '34 I use Dupont Chroma Base, #R664 Mohagany. Or for a deeper look, #R668 dark brown walnut. Use a spray gun in about 70 degree temperature, put on 3 or 4 coats. It dries quick, so you can start graining in an hour or so if you want. After graining, shoot on the Chroma Clear. Don't rush, do plenty of coats, you can always color sand it after it hardens for a day. REMINDER to woodgrain the lip on the top front because you can see the whole thing when you crank out the windshield. I have done many '34 dashes, so contact me if you have any questions, I have a lot of photos to send if they will help, attached a photo of a '33 Roadster dash, and a '32 Roadster dash (done with incorrect '33'34 burl, but the owner likes that pattern) (831) 277-7916 email: fullscalemodels@yahoo.com

D (Al) ........................
Here is the original woodgraining on an original 1934 FORD ashtray.
This would be good to try to copy.
It looks, to me, like the dark orange is about 50% covered by the black.
