won't run

“29 starts with difficulty,” runs” and sputters irregularly for a minute, then dies. Problem may have existed to a minor degree before head gasket replaced for leak but seems worse now. Spark advance affects it, but not significantly nor consistently, and the engine dies anyway.
I have pulled the distributor, checked gaps many times, and rechecked TDC several times. Replaced the coil because I thought spark was not blue enough. Spark plugs cleaned. Fuel flows easily to carb, Carb was replaced 4 years ago with repro but ran well. I have checked to ascertain that upper shaft fits properly into lower shaft.
Since I thought I checked everything “in the books” to solve the problem, what have I done wrong? -- or what haven’t I done right?

my guess is a fuel problem.

check to see what the compression is.

if you pull the plugs, lay the coil wire on the head, turn on the key, and then crank it over with the starter and if you have spark, then move on to see if it is a fuel problem.

air/fuel mixture
compression
timed ignition
are the three things you need.

Post #3 is a good place to start
How long has it been sitting with that gas in the tank? Is it corn gas?
Loosen/remove your gas cap next time you try to start
