With or without hood

:):cool:I have never seen this question posted before. I have a 1935 ford. It has a tendency to run a little hot. My question is: Would a car like mine run cooler with or without a hood? Right now i do not have a hood on and the temp runs 180 to 200.

Most cars I have had run cooler with a hood,,the air is pulled through the radiator and forced around and out the louvers in the hood sides.

I have noted that the very same car ran a good 20 degrees cooler with the hood and side panels attached.HRP

Air passes under hood at higher speeds.
Around town with intersection stopping, or idling, it
will run cooler without hood to dissipate hot air.

When I was driving my 1939 Standard as my daily driver in the 60's, I routinely removed the side panels and ran all summer with the side panels open for heat dissipation. The engine temp gauge not only ran slightly cooler, especially around town but, the interior of the car was noticeably cooler too.
It was 150 miles each way to college and on the Interstate I needed all the heat relief that I could get. Yes, I always ran at least the posted 70 MPH speed limit, you know how 19 year old teens were!

I concur with Ross. I also have a 39 Std coupe and it definitely runs cooler without the side panels

they are allot easier to work on with out the hood also!

Remember these cars had engine pans as well which, coupled with the hood and side panels drew the air over the entire engine and out underneath. Without those pans, some cooling is lost.

last year a friend of mine was helping me adjust the grill shell to get rid of the 3/4 gap in the hood and firewall.
and on that weekend i put about 300 miles on my little '34 in 85 to 90 degree sun.
i did not have to open the factory air once, and the temp just sat at 150 every day, it was great.

Nope, my '39 still had all of the original splash shields in place. It still ran cooler without the side panels in the hot Oklahoma Summers.
