with or without head ?

Next weekend we are finally embarking on replacing the front conrod and piston.
Last year we ran the big end and could not find time to replace.

If at all possible I would like to leave the head on not disturbing the weak cylinderblock casting.

Anybody experience in putting the piston in from below ?

Thanks

The head has to come off no matter what. You need to check the bore for a ridge at the top anyway when you fit the new piston (if it can even get past the ridge). You can't pull a T piston from the bottom unless you take out the crank. Weak block or not it's a small matter to remove the head even if you have to be extra careful putting it back. And when the head is off you can remove all the carbon and give the valves a quick lap, as well as take a good look around to see what else is going on in there. Why make a piston swap any more difficult than it needs to be?

John, pistons are brand new alu +040 and the honing pattern is still clearly on the cylinder wall. After removing the sump last year we had the affected rod and piston out passing the crankshaft in place. I will at least give it a try to refit that way too and yes it will be a fiddle but just hoped for people tuning in saying they had done that as well !
