wiring gas gauge

So I have a 55 TBird, converted to 12v.

As part of a major revamp of the interior and motor I replaced the dash loom and some of the old gauges, including the gas gauge.

I got the NPD replacement which is a matched 12v gauge/sender unit.

Can anyone help on the wiring of this. I do have the two wires from the loom ready to connect but have three terminals, one of which has a short green wire. I am assuming this is to ground the body (then why is it insulated from the body?) and the other two are for the remaining wires.

Anyone come across these gauges?

Is NPD the brand? Or is that National Parts Depot? If you know the brand of gauge you could prolly find a wiring diagram on the web. I googled NPD fuel gauge but all I came up with was National Parts Depot.

Yup, got it from National Parts Depot. No brand name on it.

This is it and you can actually see the green tail in the image on this page.

I will give them a call in the morning and see if they can help me out. Just hope I don't get a "we just sell them" response.

Hmm, private label I guess. Just a SWAG here, but I'm guessing the green wire grounds the gauge to the dash. The original gauge grounded at the sender and was the only ground in the fuel gauge system. Your new gauge my operate on a different principle, hence may have a different ground location.

I also have a '55 T-Bird, converted to 12v. The sender & tank were both rusted out.
Bought what is probably the same fuel gauge & sender kit, from CASCO.

Here's photos of the instruction sheet.

T'daaa!

Thanks a million. I thought that would be it but didn't want to 'guess'.

Yep. "No return on electrical parts once installed."

Good luck with it.

FYI. on top of the original sending unit in the tank was a small silver capacitor with a black pigtail wire. Due to the different way this sender & gauge function the capacitor is not needed. Just leave it in a box somewhere.

Thanks, don't have that on mine, just the yellow straight to the sender. Once my back recovers from hooking up 80% of the rest of the under dash wiring I will dive back under there and sort out the gas and temp gauges, they are both the same.

Looks like I will have all electrics done this week. Then, carpet and seat back in this weekend. Beginning to look like a car again.

Same as the gauge wiring on my '59. Lousy picture but it shows some colors. The light blue wire is common to all the dash bulbs.
