Wiper Vacuum Motor, '58 Fairlane

quit fooling with the vacuum wiper, repace it with an electric one, they make a change over kit

Ditto on Ford 3 - get the kit from New Port Engineering.

However, you might want to try this first. Disconnect the rubber hose in the engine compartment that goes to the wiper motor. Fill a can or jar with some Dot 3 brake fluid. Stick the hose into the jar of fluid and manually operate the wipers back and forth about ten times (get a helper to work the other side). The fluid should suck up into the wiper motor. Let it sit overnight and then try the wipers. If its just the "paddle" on the inside of the motor, this might fix it. Put a rag down on the carpet under the motor to catch any drips. When you start the car, it may smoke some but will clear up.

If this doesn't fix it, go with the electrics.

Is it mounted on the firewall engine side or under the dash? If it's engine side,I have one for sale that has been rebuilt. $25.00 plus shipping. 904 571-4323

i agree with the newport kit i put it in my 55 wagon they work great go for the intermittent
option also get the adapter to use your stock knob its worth the investment

Ditto on the Newport Engineering kit. A true bolt-in and change-over took less than an hour including the kit that let me reuse the original knob on my '56.

Thanks guys. I hesitated on the electric conversion because I wanted to use the stock knob on the dash, which I can apparently do with the adapter kit.

Quick update. I replaced the fuel pump because of a noisy rocker arm [failing diaphram?]. After reconnecting the vacuum lines, the wipers began to work again. Never thought to trouble shoot the fuel pump for a wiper problem.

I need to rebuild the vacuum wiper motor on my '58. Has anyone had experience with the Wiperman in Babylon N.Y.?

I had to have my '51 wiper motor rebuilt as the car is 6 volt, and the Wiperman did a great job, and would recommend him 100%. :)
