how does the wiper switch work i have not seen one together nor seen one work looks like all it is an arm that moves side to side but what is it moving to turn on wipers

There should be a knob on the dash with a small rod that connects the knob to the arm on the wiper.

Not dash, up above windshield. One is a pull/push to turn on, other rotates to control speed. Can post pics later today if needed.

Sorry, I was thinking '40 pickup. The push pull switch allows vacuum from the engine to operate the wiper. The other is the speed control switch. There's a flapper inside the wiper motor that is pulled back and forth by the vacuum. The flapper is attached to the main shaft and the wiper arm is attached to that shaft.

Heres a photo of the one that was in my truck.
