Winfield update.

Today I assembled 4 more Winfields for pouring tomorrow. For those who prefer the more pronounced crow's foot design, I have the model finished for that and will be cutting those chambers for molding some more castings asap.

Tod, If you run a piston .031 out of the hole with a .050 compressed gasket and have .031" flycut in the head over the piston, what is the final CR this head would have?

What is your cylinder diameter?

If at this point I don't know what engine I'll be running the head on would you suggest not having it cut and having it done locally when I'm ready?

That would be a sure way to get what you want/need. Also, I can make heads without piston reliefs and cut them in when a customer orders what he needs.

Good to know. I just don't want to miss out on these when they become available. Any projected timeline on retail of them yet? No pressure just curious:)

I'm waiting to see how the 4 poured today come out with the cores I used, and if things are good I will order another 30 cores for the first full-production run.

Tod, sorry about that, the bore would be 4.00" with stock stroke, 1.70" intake and stock exhaust.

Tod, given the same setup numbers what is the difference in performance between the Crow Foot and the new Thomas iron head you are doing? IYO would one be better for a hot street motor build or is it just a looks/style issue?

My crow's foot has a little more compression than the old style. Some guys want the old style so it can be as original as possible, I guess. That is why I am also going to cut a chamber pattern for those guys. I have it modeled up and have material to cut it, but my machine is busy cutting a core box for a non-A V8 head right now. Be a week or 2 until I get to it.

You'd be better asking the experts about the performance issue. I'm not a builder, so I defer to those in the know.

Thanks Tod, hardtimes & others on the site have been very helpful with the performance information. I was just trying to figure out the performance difference between your Winfield crow's foot & the new Thomas iron head you are building?

You have a fair question :) ! Your question is similar to one comment ask here recently, i.e.- would like to see comparison tests with ALL of the new heads and see performance results (essence of Q)
IMO/answer to both questions is with a question...are YOU aware that there is a LOT of money involved to make such testing happen. Think about the amount of time/money/effort/cost of collecting ALL such heads in one place with a dyno machine and competent owner/operator  !!

Each/every head would have to have exact same same equipment to test each head , with same attention to detail/conditions...good luck setting that deep pocket situation up.

So, is there an alternative...yeah, seat of the pants testing by serious minded members here, who would like same answers as YOU :D. Ok, so it still wouldn't be sooo easy and/or technical. Would/could YOU trust it then..ha !!

As you see an answer to this type inquiry is complicated, to say the least.

Like er, ahh, um..model As, we all have opinions and most times most opinions are different.
My opinion has pretty much been established, in writing, regarding Tod's making NEW stuff (heads) for us, especially in NEW cast iron. WHO else,eh
I tested and am still using his first cast iron example Winfield head. I am really happy with what I working with in this head. As said , it is working hard with no problems and I do not expect any. But, WILL report if any such problems occur. However, do YOU believe what I've said/done/written ? Maybe not. I've had one Fordbarner ride with me right after the head install and tune. I think that he has expressed his opinion here also. In life I know that there is good reason to be skeptical of everything !! Every Fordbarn member/friend , come look and even test drive for yourself, while it is still on this B :)

hardtimes -- Not looking for a Dyno results, been there with my past racing motors,

This build and information is from the "old school system" just would like to see if there is any performance advantages with eather head. No dyno test, flow bench results, ect ---- just seat of the pants results from guys that have run them.:D

Don't cost a lot for testing when you put a head on and run it awhile and see how it performs.

Rich,
What ignition, A or B, and advance setting is working good with this head?

Any sensitivity to spark timing with this head? (like Lion?)

Hey Vince,
I tried different combinations. I got best results from a Jim Lindner (aka Bubba) made aluminum bodied single point set with auto advance.
After speaking with Jim, I set the crank timing (with a light) at 0 degrees. Jim explained that his distributor was set up on his dist machine to have a maximum of 28 degrees. He feels that that is maximum for what I was doing, i.e.-flathead use.
BTW..having used a lion head 111 when that series first came out and for about 8 yrs, I agree with that head being more sensitive than others , to spark timing.

It runs so strong on my B, that I hate to take it off. But, have plans to get even higher compression ratio out of it and hopefully more horse power, by putting it on a B where it will be set up as 8:1 comp ratio, an electronic dist or vertex scintilla mag, with two B Winfield downdrafts. All Babbitt:).

The iron foundry poured 4 more sample crow's foot heads late last week. I was able to get to the foundry today to look everything over. They said one looked like it had a core break, but I am certain it was just a slight miss-run due to being last in line and the metal was not hot enough. We will cut it to find out for sure but I'm going to machine it anyway just to further prove out my machining. No sense making a mistake on a good casting.

So, I will order more cores for another small run to make sure things go smoothly.
