Winfield-lumpy idle??

I have a 59a block with a reground cam. bored .40 over. with 2 48's on an evans intake. The specs he gave me match up to a winfield SU1a or close to it. As I have heard his cams for that model varried slightly. Was wondering what other people running this camshaft felt at idle.
What is you RPM set at?
At that idle speed do you have a lumpy/low vacuum idle?
The engine is smooth as silk when brought up on the pipe. COuld it be other issue elsewhere?
Any help would be great! Thank you

Im running that cam, I used to set my idle really low till it would almost quit. But then a friend came over and gave me sh** for trying to tear the bottom end of my motor with an idle speed like that. But even down that low, I seem to recall the vacuum being fiarly stable (tho mine is a 276, and the smaller cubes you go, the more radical the came becomes in comparison, so ive been told), it was probably sub 500 at the time. Now its up to around 700, and smoothed out, tho a little loud (mufflers are next on the too do list). Tho by 700, your probably starting to come off the idle cuircuit anyway.

Is it REALLY rough compared to other flatties you have heard? When was the last time the carbs were given a really good going threw?

If it is an original Winfield SU1A, it is 280 duration so don't expect a very smooth idle below 700 rpm.
Many cam grinders have put "SU1A" on just about everything that has been designed just to sell cams.

The youtube video link below is the 284 stroker motor in my '40 with a Winfield SU-1A. I don't have a tach, but if I were to guess, I'd say it's idling around 900 rpm. The motor is smooth overall, but definitely has a lopey idle.

What do you mean "tear the bottom end out of my motor"? Is a low idle really that bad or is it trouble with performance mods?

That there 40 is painfully nice, sounds great too. Are you running mufflers at all, or just open pipe to the back?
Martin.

Maybe Ill try and post a video of it idling and se what you guys think. It definately sounds good but at idle the car kinda rocks with the lobes. COuld it be the 32 motor mounts? Are they too centered to balance out the motor rocking. Thanks for the help

I idle my 39 with a 276 er with a SU1A at around 700 - 750 rpm. Has a great sound. I like to idle mine just a little faster also to keep the crank mounted van pushing a little more air.

My cam is from H&H. I think finding the closest to original SU-1A is like finding the closest to original GM 30-30 cam.

Call Elgin Cams 707-545-6115, ask to talk to "Dema". He apparently has Winfield masters. There were several SU1-A grinds.

Really? I didn't know that. Thanks for letting us know. Someone mentioned it earlier, there are so many copies of copies of copies of Winfield cams, I think a lot got lost in translation,

I'm a big fan of Mr. Winfield's and would like to get a cam as close to his originals as possible.

The man knew his stuff.

Yep, dema has them.

He acutally redesigned it, as the original su1a has VERY slow ramps.....

And that is not efficent(spell?)
