Windshield wiper motor mount

Hi all. I'm trying to get the wiper motor mounted on my '28 Tudor, and things aren't making sense.

I wasn't able to us the old one as a guide, as it was the wrong motor, kludged on with angle iron :(

First question: Does the motor mount to the windshield frame (IOW, with the mounts going through the header piece) or does it mount to the header? I have been operating on the assumption that it mounts to the windshield, and pivots with the windshield, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what sort of mount would go through the holes in the header without hanging up on them. If instead it mounts to the header, does that mean that there's no solid connection between the shaft housing and the windshield? It seems like it would have to.

Anyway. If anybody has pix of how their wiper motors are mounted, that would be much appreciate. Especially if there are pix with the interior strip not in place.

Thanks in advance . . .

Someone in your club should have a car you can look at as a reference. Refer to the judging standards and restoration guidelines to reference the various wiper configurations.

Unfortunately the Marco diagram does not include the holes for the 28 and early 29 closed car OD-C1 electric wiper mounts that have the non symmetrical holes.

The judging standards have the best info for that. Additionally, the Service Bulletins have a page that shows how to drill the windshield frame that has holes for the earlier non-symmetrical wiper mounts to accept the later motors. I am away from home, so I can't cite the page involved.

The original motor mounts to the outside of the windshield frame with rubber mounts.

That all is helpful.

I did dig through the judging standards (as usual, Ford kept tweaking the design, so there's lots of variants)

The real problem I'm trying to figure out: I think I'm after number 2, in the Marco diagram. It matches the motor I have, and the holes in the frame. But if the motor is inside, and the mounts go to the frame, how do the mounts clear the holes in the header? I couldn't find any pix or descriptions of how that works, even in the judging standards.

Closed car units were fitted to the outside. Open car units were inside. If looking for an original type wiper motor, a person has to find out which types were used on the individual car. There were many aftermarket units that have been adapted over the years to model As. I tried to provide a link to MAFCA's pdf file on wipers but they have changed to a new site format and no longer list the tech pdfs. I tried uploading the file from my drive but it is too large to be included in this sites framework.

1928 closed cars are relatively early cars so the units to look for are the Owen Dyneto OD-C1A & OD-C1B. The Heinze HA-TC1 didn't come along until very late in December of 1928 so it was likely not used on many 1928 cars. The EA Labs units came along in 1929.

Well, ok, that clears up one point: For my '28, the motor was supposed to be mounted on the outside. Thus the issue of clearing the header doesn't exist.

I have a Heinze, It doesn't match exactly the pix of the HA-TC1, but it does match the long wiper drive shaft, and the short switch shaft. It's clearly intended to be mounted inside. I got it at a swap meet, advertised as being for a '28, before I realized all the other variants I should have been looking for.

This may be another part of my confusion. Did the Town Car not have a pop-out windshield? If not, that would explain why I've been tearing my hair out trying to get this to fit. If the windshield doesn't move, it would be a lot easier.

I may have to put this on the shelf and find an OD or aftermarket one.

Snyders sells an aftermarket one, that allows the windshield to articulate.

Hang on to your Heinze, those things are valuable. If your aftermarket unit works out, sell the Heinze and put cash in your pocket. Don't put it in the shelf and hog it up, someone may need it.

Fair enough.

The Snyder's unit is out of stock. There are a couple of the other mail order places which claim to have them, but they're also out of stock. Probably one manufacturer sources all of them.

I won't hoard the Heinze unit. This is probably the last A I will do, and I have a bunch of parts which are going to be surplus. Once I get it done I'll sell off whatever I don't need.

Give John a call. He is an excellent source for wiper information. His work is outstanding and reasonable.

The modern unit that is currently out of stock was a combination of a specially machined mounting bracket that was set up to use the currently available small aftermarket wiper motor. I don't know if it was set up to replace the early Owens Dyneto units or the more common units that were used in 1929 & early 1930. Trico vacuum units took over after that.
