Windshield Swing Arm Quality

windshield_arm.jpg

I posted this probably 10 years ago. I don't know how they are now but they used to be problematic in two ways. First, I believe they were die cast zinc making them less than ideal structurally. Note the hole location on the repro below the original. The distance it too short. The arm would not lift up into the vertical position where it will relax while holding the windshield closed firmly. When I attempted force it up it snapped as shown in the center example.

I told my buddy to quit being cheap and just get his originals plated. There may be decent fitting arms made today but I wouldn't know. Maybe Phil or Steve from Bert's will chime in here. They may even have some replated originals available.

You know its amazing, how hard is it to copy something especially as simple as that!

I understand when something is made from cheaper material, or not plated as well but this is just flat out wrong in several ways.

Thanks for the informative replies. I will use my originals as-is until I can get definite information about the currently made repros. My old ones are not good enough to have replated, and I can change them later at any time.

-We have numerous set of NOT- replated originals @ $10 pair. The new ones are made thin like the later originals.Nobody has ever made new ones of the thick 1928-1929 style. Originals were brass, nickle plated.

Hi,
on the w/s arms. You might have noticed that the original arms have the manafacture,s stamp on them. The repro,s don,t. As i remember, i think i have seen at least three or four diferent ones. If you can, i would try and keep them in mtching sets.
