Windshield Sealer

Gonna put in a new windshield in my 40 before I head up to Dawsonville cause my old one is so scratched it looks like spider webs when you meet oncomming traffic at night. What sealer do I need for this ? Dont really like the idea of using silicone, some of them will cause rust problems.

NAPA makes a winshield sealer, comes in a small 5 fl. oz tube.
Part number is (Pro Sealers) # 4121.
Be carefull to NOT get it on headliner or upholstery, as the
black, goooooy stuff can't be removed from fabric.

i just intalled a new windshield rubber from dennis carpenter in my 41 ford and comes with detailed instructions and says nothing about using any sealer any where. we just used wd40 and 2 pair of hands..al:)

I would install the windshield gasket without sealer and see how you fare - trying to do this at install will not be the easiest thing to do and keep it clean. In the past I have not been fond of Carpenter's windshield gasket - I prefer Drakes but he's out of stock I believe with a long lead time. Hopefully, since my Carpenter experience is an older one, they are better now.

Undoubtedly it will leak around the lower outside corners. I would use the NAPA sealer for the center bar as that is a leak point. Remember that at speed and in a driving rain, water is being "forced" around the rubber as your body flexes a bit. Just have a rag handy!

What I have done that has slowed the leaks tremendously though is to use the clear sealer under the lips of the rubber gasket. It comes in a small tube with a nice tip and you can get under the rubber fairly easily. It's a cleaner install and it will clean off on your paint and interior.

IMHO you will never stop the leaks on a 40 Ford front windshield - just slow them down alot.

Just a suggestion about windshield gaskets and installation. It is important that the replacement glass be cut to exact size of the original glass and be of the same thickness.

The windshield gasket actually stretches over the glass an promotes the seal so no additional sealer is required. If the glass is cut to small or cut unevenly the gasket will not seal tightly on the perimeter of the glass and a leak will develop. If you are worried, sealer can be lightly applied to the inside trough of the gasket but overdoing it will cause it to ooze out and make a mess.

Also avoid using chemicals such as WD40 as these can stain or damage painted surfaces. A good lubricant to aid the installation of any windshield gasket is common liquid dish washing soap. This will provide a slippery surface and wash off easily with out staining anything.

Of most concern for a no leak windshield is to insure that the glass is cut to size correctly.

I already have a new gasket, came from Carpenter several years ago. The windshield is N.O.S. Ford so it should be a good fit.

I used the same sealer on my 40 Ford in 1978. It works great.I also used it on the rear windows and 1/4 windows. No leaks yet.
