Windshield Knob

I am trying to remove the windshield openning knob on my '39 pickup. I have removed the set screw and loaded it up with PBBlaster but no luck yet. I need to check the regulator and get it freed up. I am afraid to put heat on the knob for fear of melting the pot metal. Any hints on removing the knob?

I would keep soaking as much and long as possible. Those knobs are super hard to come by.I would be very afraid of applying heat and don"t know if melting wax to follow the threads would work or not.Best luck to you!!

They re pop the front window knobs, not that you should wreck this one, take a piece of copper tube and slip it into a rubber hose, take some cotton cloth and wrap it around the handle, gently tap the tube on the handle on alternating sides of the tee, as you do this see if you can rotate it slightly back and forth, it may just be caught on a gear wrong, each time go through a cycle tap and lube. She will come off.

I got the knob off this afternoon after studing the problem. The knob has a groove in it just under the area hidden by the upper dash or windshield regulator cover. This groove is 1/32" deep and just as wide. The shaft for the regulator appears to be mounted slightly forward of where it should be and the front edge of the knob is caught in the groove by the edge of the panel. I could not pop it off, so I took a piece of thin sheet metal and forced it between the knob and the upper panel by pushing the sheetmetal and turning the knob at the same time. I was then able to pry the knob up and off. When it goes back I will see to it that the shaft is centered in the hole.
