Windshield Glass Setting ?

I have been cleaning up my 29 open car windshield frame getting it ready for paint and glass.

Can I set the glass myself if I order it from one of the big 3?

How difficult is it to do so? Although I've never worked with automotive glass, it looks like it should be fairly straight forward.

Who has the best glass setting material?

Any special tricks or techniques?

Thanks,
Jon

You can get the cork setting material from the usual suppliers. I set my own a few weeks ago using double pipe clamps to force it into the channel. Sort of nerve wracking. It probably isn't expensive to have a glass shop do it. I primed it before glass and painted after the glass was in.

Sometimes the setting rubber the A dealers send is too thick and if you try to install the glass you will brake it. I went to the auto glass business here in Quincy, CA and found he had 3 different thickness of setting rubber. I got the next size down from what the A dealer sent and the glass installed just fine.

I have found a local glass person can do it far better than I can and have that person also get the glass for you. I primed mine before having the glass installed and painted it after.
