Window crank question

'30 coupe. The drivers side window crank on my coupe keeps creeping the window up when it is in the down position while driving it. It is annoying to have to keep cranking it down. It will creep up a couple of inches and stay there. Is there any fix for this?

I have seen recommendations for the handle to be horizontal and oriented so that the weight will help to hold the window up and this may work for you when it is down. I am not sure if that will be enough in your case.

Another suggestion is to add shims behind the tracks to add more friction. I have used balsa strips but others have used cardboard.

Other than that, I think you need to take the door apart and change the spring orientation to lessen the spring force. I don't know how to do that or if it is even possible. Lessening the spring force may not keep the window up when it is closed.

A temporary fix would be to carve a wooden wedge to fit in the track to keep the window down.

I had the very same problem years ago on my town sedan. Since I have not added turn signals to the car I need the window down for hand signals. I replaced the window regulator. Problem solved. All the parts suppliers have them.

Yep new regulator needed. Buy “the good one” from a vendor that knows the difference.
The cheapest aren’t the best by far.

I had this problem with a survivor '31 Slant Windshield. The regulator seemed rickety and worn when cranking the window up and down. I never tried it, but often wondered if removing the regulator and tightening up the rivets at the pivot points slightly with a ball peen hammer would help take out some of the looseness and apply some tension to the mechanism.

Thanks all for the replies. I am loathe to replace the original regulator as it functions very well other than the spring tension constantly raising the window a couple inches when driving. Any other suggestions?

originally there was a spring brake built into the regulator, between the gear and the shaft the crank fits in,it is a spring coiled inside the housing that moving the handle releases.
I don’t know what comes in the modern rebuild kits but the old ones came with it

That spring acts as a clutch to stop the window when the handle is not turned. The repair kits might work but are a bit of a "crap shoot" as Ford had several suppliers (and there were aftermarket ones) which only one are two work with the kit, the rest are of different designs.

It's not that hard to replace the regulator. Do yourself a favor and get it done. I kept putting mine off until it became difficult to use. Wish I did it sooner.
