Windlace question

I'm putting on the forward section of the windlace on a 29 Tudor. The semitubular rivets they sent are too short to even make it through the hole. I have searched and longer rivets are available, but either you have to by 100 for $50, on eBay they are $10 for 10 plus $4 shipping. Plus I just don't want to wait 2 weeks.

Did you guys just use poprivets? I was thinking I could seal the hole with aluminum body filler.

Any Ideas from the brain trust?

Pop rivet wont work very well as they have a protruding back side that will interfere with the installation of the cowl panel and windshield post garnish. Beside they don't look very good. You could use split rivets as the back side is covered by the cowl panel and windshield garnish. Have you tried your local hardware store like Ace? They have a lot of small hardware items and I bet they have semi-tubular rivets that would work. I have cut off (ground off or filled off) longer semi-tubular rivets to fit different jobs.

If I recall, we used rivets for Tonka toy trucks that we trimmed to the correct length. You might search for Tonka rivets. And, I am thinking we paid less than $10.00 for all of them.

Thanks, I have been to Ace, and all the big box stores. Nobody carries them, only poprivets.
It is so frustrating when you pay big bucks for an interior, and you have to rebuy half the things in the kit. There is no physical way these rivets will fit. I have had to re-buy so much, and each time it's 2 weeks wait.

Sounds like a real drag.....care to share which company built the interior kit?

Thank you, I just placed the order. Their listed rivet is 11/32, the one I was set is 9/32, so I also ordered 3/8 so I will have a choice.
The 9/32 in the kit is flush with the metal.

I bought some from Ace Hdwe. They were in the small little drawers where they keep the specialty Hdwe items. Usually near the bolts, nuts, screws etc.

Go with semi-tubular rivits only as original. They are installed with heads facing out and were painted body color. Originally, they installed the windlace in a paper covering and painted the body, then removed the paper during assembly. That's how the rivit heads were painted body color.

Yes, I am glad you said this Gary. I debated whether to go down that road discussing it in this thread but this was something I learned from Bill Sturm several years ago, ...and found that many times today's windlace is not made correctly.
