The resistance of the air blowing against the car (drag) is a function of the square of the relative velocity. When I hit a strong headwind, I just slow down. And in Kansas we have some strong winds from time to time. Saves the engine.

Wish I had some wind tunnel data to determine how much power is required to push thru a 20 mph headwind versus no wind.

I was driving today at 40-45 mph and have a real sharp whistling sound when the wind was out of the right direction. I was driving my roadster pickup and think it was coming from the windshield header area. Just wondering if others have this problem?

The gasket around the windshield frame of our Tudor is notable for its absence. We get a moaning sound from the windshield in a cross-wind.

When driving with the windshield open, there is a similar sound no matter the wind strength or direction.

Yesterday, the wind was gusting at over 30 mph, crosswind blew my cap off as I always drive with the door window open. Gives me more elbow room!

Some people like high winds when driving in their Model A....like the owner of the Model A in this photo who uses it to test wind power generators:

The wind and my Model A engine didn't mix too well two weeks ago. A gust of wind blew the motor over and it fell off my little wagon, breaking the aluminum crank pulley. This is the engine from the homemade deer hauler that I'm going to use as a temporary engine in my Phaeton.

Im told it takes close to 190HP to push a stock body coupe too 115mph , according to the record holder, That's in creditable , but been done , Nearly the shortest day in NZ

That guy must have had big balls and plenty of rocks in his head! My maximum controllable speed is 55, yes I could go faster but what is the rush? Very seriously if you want more stability I strongly suggest Pannard Bars, inexpensive and easy to install, The rear Pannard makes the most difference.

Actually it was a lady , I was there & saw it , 2013, Bonneville, Also a lady ? holds the side valve record too, same car at 97,1 mph. stock body, a coupe with headlights, bumpers, sun visor, etc , Did have one of our Q/C,s in it, the best my old hayseed engine would do was 88mph & felt very stable . A life time dream ,

Well that is interesting! and you had your bucket of bolts as fast as 88! you have courage much more than I do. :D

So, let's see: ((50/115)^2) *195 = 37 HP required at 50 MPH. Sounds about right.

John,

I thought that the wind force varied by the cube of the velocity ?

Yes . I also had the thrill of driving that car belonging to Pete with my hayseed engine in it , That's as close to Heaven as one can get with out opening the gates, It also holds the OHV record with Petes Daughter , then son in law driving in 2013 .Does run one of my Quickchange rears, Truly a great family , foot note , I believe Tonya now runs a bike there, The car is stable at 115mph ?? well fairly , Derek in a cold wet winter,

I have a Model T Centerdoor Sedan and every time I cross the Golden Gate Bridge
I have to open all the side windows so not to be blown all over the road.......
