Thanks to everyone that responded to my post. Completely rebuilt the distributor, new base,upper & lower shafts, Cap,body,rotor and modern points & condenser. Reset timing, Flushed the radiator, tightened fan belt and sprinkled holy water on the engine. Runs great and at a temp. of 170 deg. Time will tell if the problem has been solved. If it happens again that updraft carb is history. Bob
