Wide whitewall tires

I took my 47 out for a breakfast run this morning and started to hear a thumping noise on the left front tire. I had a large chunk tear out of the front left tire. Lucky I didn't blow the tire out ! No telling how old these tires are but I wanted wide whitewalls anyway. The stock wheels have been powder coated and have P215/70R15 on them right now. What's a good size tire replacement and good place to buy the wide whitewalls ? Coker ? others ?

Looking at one website stated these cars had 16 wheels from the factory with 6.00 -16 tires. I guess my 15 wheels are not stock.

Check out Diamond Back and Coker below. Also, I think Jegs and Summit may offer lower prices on Cokers and may have lower shipping costs also.

Here's another company that offers FORD script tires.

Finally, peruse these tire postings on Fordbarn and HAMB.

Also, you might get a good deal on someone who is selling their slightly used tires or have changed their mind about using the new tires they just bought. Be sure and find out the date the tires were manufactured. Seven years is the max. Looking new doesn't mean they are new.

If this were my car I would probably change to a 205/75 R 15 size tire. This is a slightly taller tire and also slightly narrower which I find more in keeping with a traditional look. Of course that being said a radial is not really in keeping with a traditional look now is it? But they sure do ride and drive better.

You are very lucky, what is the date code on the tire? Before you purchase any tires, I would suggest doing a search on this site. There have been several conversations about tire issues on this site.

I haven't check the date code. I just noticed the tires had decent tread when I bought the car but didn't really look them over that much. I knew I'd probably replace them, down the road. Just didn't know how short that road turned out to be ! Lucky I didn't blow out a tire on the front, do a roll-over, and without any seats belts. Someone was looking out for me.

You're right, a lot of good info on tires after searching the site.

Good reviews on Diamond Backs, not so much on Cokers. Much written in Posts / threads indicating problems balancing many Coker's.

I noticed this must be a frequent discussion, after doing some searching. A lot of different opinions, also including bias vs radial's. I've looked at the Cokers but have to check out the Diamond Backs.

I have removed Diamond Backs from two of my cars due to hard steering.I replaced them with Coker bias plys .The steering effort improved ,the ride and handling while still acceptable is not as good as the DB radials.Phil
