Do you have the cutout that has a green wheel? If so, take it off and throw it as far away as you can. Why?
I had an issue with starting for about 2 months. I had 6.2 volts at the starter but sometimes it would not engage and other times it cranked very slowly. I spent considerable time trying to figure this out. Then the starter failed and would not turn over all. After checking and eliminating problems with the wiring, I decided to take the cutout off and had the battery cable connect directly to the starter. The starter then turned over slowly and barely started.
The cutout was severely reducing the amperage going to the starter. Low amperage basically destroyed a good starter. I bought a rebuilt starter from Bert's. The starter feels like a 12 volt when starting (I'm 6 volt). It turns over faster than ever. End of problems..
