Why are my studs leaking

Getting ready to fire up my 8BA engine with Edelbrock heads and notice there is water weeping out between the stud and the nut. Nuts are torqued to 50#, I'm using early heads and Felpro gaskets. I blocked the water passages per Ol'Ron's book. Do I need to put sealent on the studs??? Thanks for any advice.

Mine leak because my Dad ran a tap down the stud holes. Hopefully your block did not have that done. I am not sure how to fix it. The leaks did slow down after a few years.

ran studs rather than bolts??...yep, should have sealant on the threads into the block as some of those holes go into the water jacket....Mike

Plumbers black graphite is the best sealant IMO to use on your studs, particularly the ones that go straight into the water jacket.

Ignore the naysayers on a stopleak. You should first use Aviation Permatex on EVERY stud. Almost ALL studs go into water jackets. Then, use some Bars if you have leaks that last over a week.

I just went through the very same thing a week ago. I put the gasket over the studs and then at the base of the stud with a q- tip I put a small amount around the stud. Then torque them down.
